The Problem
The rise of AI and automation has ushered in a growing trend against full-time equivalents (FTEs) and bloated teams in the tech industry. Public was working towards automating workflows, but Lead of Accounting Operations, Steve Nolan, recognized that there was still a need for a manual component – an actual person who would own, oversee, and shepherd that process. Hiring a full-time, junior-level employee wasn’t the most cost-effective way to do that, and experience with alternative staffing solutions fell short.
Public had previously worked with human resources consulting firm, Robert Half, to integrate a contractual hire, but the quality just wasn’t there. Steve had to constantly monitor the talent to make sure that their output was up to par, creating more problems than solved: “It was quite time-consuming, and we didn’t see what we needed from them.”
With the departure of a key manager, Public faced a pivotal challenge in turnover. Steve and then-Staff Accountant Yutang Xu were forced to absorb a lot of extra responsibilities and urgently needed support to free them of prep work and allow them to refocus on more pressing tasks.
The Solution
Speed was Public’s primary priority – they needed to fill a critical gap fast and wanted to put someone in as soon as possible. Within a day, MAVI delivered three candidate profiles and immediately scheduled interviews. This combination of velocity and efficiency was a huge factor in the Public team’s decision to move forward. At that point, Steve was still unfamiliar with the quality of MAVI’s talent pool, but that quickly became a key differentiator.

Seeing this information gave Steve a lot of confidence: “In my mind, I was like, ‘Wow, I don’t need to train them anymore; they understand how to use NetSuite… I just need to [teach] them our process, but the actual technicalities – they know how to press the keys and perform the function.’”

“The skillset is incredibly strong, where they have a great knowledge of what we need them to do, whether that be technical from different tools, also Excel – just very polished, [putting] out good output instead of other contractors we’ve worked with who you need to [monitor and guide], adding more work for us internally.”

She also optimized Public’s cash management and month-end close. Before bringing her on, Public wanted to migrate journal entries to NetSuite for cash reporting. The MAVI Talent spearheaded this initiative, automating the process. The team’s weekly cash report is now on NetSuite, so by month-end close, they already have 30 days of transactions recorded and reconciled.
